Wolf: the golf game with a decision on every tee

Wolf is the best game for four friends because it makes the tee shot matter twice: once for the ball and once for the choice. Here are the rules, the points, the strategy that actually wins, and a scorer so the card stays honest.

Short answer: the wolf rotates each hole, drives first and watches the others. After each drive the wolf picks that player as partner or passes; pass on all three and the wolf plays alone. Best ball decides the hole: 2 v 2 gives the winners 1 point each, a lone wolf wins 3 or hands 1 to each of the others. Most points after 18 wins.

The rules, hole by hole

  1. 1

Set the order on the first tee

Draw for it. That order is the wolf rotation for 16 holes: player 1 is the wolf on holes 1, 5, 9 and 13; player 2 on 2, 6, 10, 14; and so on. On 17 and 18 the player with the fewest points is the wolf.

  2. 2

The wolf drives first and watches

After each of the other three drives, the wolf decides: take that player as partner, or pass. A passed player cannot be chosen later on that hole. If the wolf passes on all three, the wolf is alone.

  3. 3

    Play the hole, best ball

Each side's score is its best ball (net, if you play with handicaps). Lower side wins the hole; equal is a tie and nothing is scored.

  4. 4

    Score it

2 v 2: each winner gets 1 point. Lone wolf wins: 3 points. Lone wolf loses: 1 point to each of the three. Agree the scheme before the first drive; the scorer uses this one.

Some groups give 2 points for a pair win and 4 for a lone wolf, or double the hole when the wolf declares alone before anyone drives (a blind wolf). Any scheme works as long as the lone wolf pays the three if it goes wrong: that is what keeps the choice honest.

How to win at Wolf

Take the first good drive. Waiting for the best player to hit is how you end up alone with a bad lie. Go alone when the hole is short, your drive is in play and the others are not; never go alone to catch up on a hole you do not like. And watch who is behind on 16: the player who is wolf on 17 and 18 will go alone at some point, so play those holes for par and let them chase.

Keep the group playing

Net Wolf is better Wolf, because the 20 handicap’s drive is worth picking on a hole where they have a stroke. Agree the Playing Handicaps on the tee from the handicap calculator, and if your group prefers two sides or a pot, see the other games.

Wolf questions

How do you play Wolf in golf?

Four players, a fixed order. On each hole the wolf tees off first and watches the others drive one by one. After each drive the wolf can take that player as a partner for the hole, or pass; once passed, that player cannot be chosen. If the wolf passes on all three, the wolf plays alone against the three. Best ball of each side decides the hole. The wolf rotates every hole.

How is Wolf scored?

The scheme on this page: a 2 v 2 hole gives the winning pair 1 point each; a lone wolf who wins gets 3 points; a lone wolf who loses gives 1 point to each of the other three; a tie scores nothing. Groups use other schemes (2 and 3 points, doubling), so agree yours on the first tee.

Who is the wolf on holes 17 and 18?

With four players the rotation covers 16 holes. The usual rule is that the player with the fewest points is the wolf on 17 and 18, so the last two holes give the one behind a chance. The scorer marks that default; you can change it.

When should the wolf go alone?

When the hole suits you and the drives you have seen were poor, or when you are far behind and need 3 points. Going alone on a long par 4 after your own weak drive is how points disappear. The other decision is the partner: a good drive early is worth taking even if the better player is still to hit.

Can you play Wolf with handicaps?

Yes, as net best ball: each player takes the strokes they get on the hole by stroke index and the sides compare net scores. The scorer does it when you tick net and type the playing handicaps.
