Golf club distance chart

How far you should hit each club is a question with your name on it: it depends on your club speed and your strike. Put in your driver speed or your 7-iron carry and Morris scales a full set to you; or read the measured averages for your handicap.

Short answer: an average 15-handicap man drives it about 236 yards total and hits the 7-iron 154 (Shot Scope, measured). PGA Tour players carry the driver 282 yards at 115 mph and the 7-iron 176 at 92 mph; LPGA players 223 and 143 (TrackMan, 2023). Most club golfers sit between the LPGA numbers and the 15-handicap ones.

Driver club speed is on any launch monitor; if you only know your 7-iron carry, use that. Carry is where the ball lands; total adds the roll.

Estimated carry of a well-struck shot at 95 mph driver speed (153 km/h). Scaled from TrackMan tour averages; your own numbers win.

Two things stand out. The 7-iron gap between a scratch golfer and a 25 handicap is 46 yards, and most of it is strike, not speed. And the wedges barely move with handicap: short game distance is control, which is where strokes are saved.

Tour benchmarks: carry at a known club speed

The LPGA column is the honest benchmark for most men who play on weekends: 96 mph with the driver is a common club golfer’s speed, and LPGA players turn it into 223 yards of carry because they hit the centre of the face. That is the lesson, not the number.

How the chart estimates your distances

Driver carry per mph of club speed is read between the two tour anchors (96 mph → 223 yards, 115 mph → 282 yards) and clamped at the edges; every other club is its average share of the driver’s carry in the two tour tables (a 7-iron is about 63% of a driver). The wedges below the pitching wedge keep the iron ladder’s step. It assumes a well-struck shot at sea level; it is a starting chart to be corrected with your own shots, not a verdict.

What to do with your numbers

Write your carry for every club on the range, not your best one but the one you hit six times out of ten, and play to that. If your gaps are uneven, look at loft before swing. If you want distance, the first yard comes from the centre of the face: the free swing analyzer finds the one thing costing you strike. On WhatsApp Morris reads your Garmin distances and tells you which club to hit from your own numbers. More on how far you should hit your 7-iron.

Distance questions

How far should I hit each golf club?

It depends on your club speed and your strike. A 15-handicap man's measured totals (Shot Scope) run about 236 yards with the driver, 154 with the 7-iron and 121 with the pitching wedge; a scratch golfer about 285, 178 and 141. The chart above scales a full set to your own driver speed or 7-iron carry.

What is the difference between carry and total distance?

Carry is where the ball lands; total adds the roll. Tour tables are carry (measured by radar); the Shot Scope amateur numbers are total (measured by GPS where the ball stopped). On a soft fairway or into the green, carry is the number that matters.

How many yards is one club?

About 10 to 12 yards between irons for most golfers, a bit more at tour speed (PGA Tour: 12 yards from 7 to 8 iron). If your gaps are uneven, it is usually loft gapping in the set or inconsistent strike, not a swing fault.

How far do PGA Tour players hit a 7-iron?

176 yards of carry on average at 92 mph club speed (TrackMan, 2023 season). LPGA Tour players carry it 143 yards at 78 mph. Most amateurs are closer to the LPGA numbers, and that is a useful benchmark, not an insult.

Why is my distance chart different from these numbers?

Because these are averages of well-struck shots. Yours includes thin ones, the ball, the altitude, the temperature and the wind. Build your chart from your own shots on the range or from a GPS watch that keeps averages; Morris reads Garmin distances when a player connects them.
