Golf handicap calculator

Put in your rounds and Morris gives you your Handicap Index the way the World Handicap System does it, then your Course Handicap and Playing Handicap on the tee you play today, with the strokes hole by hole.

Short answer: your Handicap Index is the average of the lowest 8 Score Differentials of your most recent 20 rounds, rounded to the tenth. A differential is (113 ÷ Slope) × (score − Course Rating − PCC). On the course, Course Handicap = Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − par); the Playing Handicap applies the format’s allowance (95% in stroke play).

1 · Your Handicap Index from your rounds

Most recent round first. Score is the adjusted gross score (net double bogey is the most a hole counts). Course Rating and Slope are on the scorecard or the tee sign.

Add 3 more rounds: a Handicap Index needs at least 3 scores.

2 · Course Handicap and Playing Handicap on the day

The tee you play from has its own Course Rating, Slope and par. The format sets the allowance (Appendix C).

Put in the course's Slope, Course Rating and par to get your Course Handicap.

How the WHS gets from your scores to a number

  1. 1

Each round becomes a Score Differential

(113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (adjusted gross score − Course Rating − PCC), rounded to the tenth. Adjusted means a hole never counts more than net double bogey. PCC is the day's playing-conditions adjustment, −1 to +3, usually 0.

  2. 2

The lowest 8 of your most recent 20 are averaged

That is your Handicap Index, to the tenth. It measures what you shoot on a good day, not your average: a bad round only matters if it pushes a good one out of the window.

  3. 3

With fewer than 20 rounds, a table says how many count

3 rounds: the lowest one minus 2.0. 4: the lowest minus 1.0. 5: the lowest. 6: the two lowest, minus 1.0. 7–8: the two lowest. 9–11: three. 12–14: four. 15–16: five. 17–18: six. 19: seven. From 20 on, eight.

  4. 4

    Your federation adds the safeguards

A soft cap slows the Index above +3.0 over your Low Handicap Index of the last year and a hard cap stops it at +5.0; a round 7.0 or more under your Index reduces it. The calculator shows the arithmetic before those.

Course Handicap and Playing Handicap

The Index is yours; the Course Handicap is what it is worth on the tee you play today: Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − par), rounded to a whole number. A Slope of 113 is standard difficulty, so a harder tee gives more strokes, and the (Course Rating − par) term makes the number relative to par, not to the rating.

The Playing Handicap is the Course Handicap times the format’s allowance, which keeps net competitions fair across handicaps. The recommended allowances (Appendix C):

FormatAllowance
Individual stroke play, Stableford, par/bogey, maximum score95%
Match play, individual100%
Four-ball stroke play and four-ball Stableford85%
Four-ball match play90%
Foursomes50% of combined
Scramble, 4 players (low to high handicap)25% / 20% / 15% / 10%
Scramble, 2 players35% / 15%

Allowances are applied to the unrounded Course Handicap, then rounded. A competition can set its own; the card or the terms of the competition say so.

A worked example

You shoot 95 (adjusted) from a tee rated 72.3 with Slope 131, PCC 0. Differential: (113 ÷ 131) × (95 − 72.3) = 0.8626 × 22.7 = 19.6. Do that for your last 20 rounds, average the lowest 8 and you have, say, 18.4. On that same tee, par 72: 18.4 × (131 ÷ 113) + (72.3 − 72) = 21.63 → Course Handicap 22. In a Stableford, 21.63 × 0.95 = 20.5 → Playing Handicap 21: one stroke on every hole and a second one on stroke index 1 to 3.

What to do with the number

A handicap tells you where you are, not what to fix. Morris looks for the one thing: the hole type that costs you most, the club you avoid, the swing fault behind the ball flight. The free swing analyzer finds one cause on video; on WhatsApp he keeps your rounds, your Index and the next thing to work on, and tells you when a round would move it.

Handicap questions

How is a golf handicap calculated under the WHS?

Each round becomes a Score Differential: (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (adjusted gross score − Course Rating − PCC). Your Handicap Index is the average of the lowest 8 differentials of your most recent 20, rounded to the tenth. With fewer than 20 rounds a table says how many count: with 3 scores only the lowest one, minus 2.0; with 10, the lowest 3; with 15, the lowest 5.

What is the difference between Handicap Index, Course Handicap and Playing Handicap?

The Handicap Index is yours, the same everywhere. The Course Handicap converts it to the tee you play today: Index × (Slope ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − par), rounded. The Playing Handicap applies the format's allowance to that: 95% in individual stroke play or Stableford, 85% in four-ball stroke play, 100% in match play.

What is a Score Differential?

What your round was worth on a course of standard difficulty (Slope 113). A 95 on a Slope 131, Course Rating 72.3 course is a 19.6 differential: (113 ÷ 131) × (95 − 72.3). It is the number the Index is built from, not your score.

Why did my handicap not change after a good round?

Because only your lowest 8 of 20 count. If the new differential is not among your best 8, the average does not move. And a bad round does not hurt you unless it pushes a good one out of the last 20.

What can this calculator not know?

Your Low Handicap Index of the last 365 days, which the soft cap (above +3.0) and hard cap (+5.0) and the exceptional-score reduction (a round 7.0 or better than your Index) depend on. Your federation's system applies them; this calculator shows the arithmetic before those safeguards.

How many strokes do I get on each hole?

From your Playing Handicap: one stroke on the holes whose stroke index is up to that number; a 22 gets two on index 1 to 4 and one on the rest. The calculator shows it hole by hole. A plus handicap gives strokes back, starting at index 18.
