What is a good golf score? Averages by handicap

First the good news: a good score is not a number, it is a number against your handicap. Here is what net par looks like, what the data says an average player shoots, and what each milestone from 100 down to 80 asks of you.

Short answer: A good score is net par or better: par plus your playing handicap, which is about 86 for a 15 handicap on a neutral par-72 course. For a new player, breaking 100 is the first target and breaking 90 the second. Shot Scope data puts the average 25-handicapper at roughly 29 over par, so the average round runs a few strokes above the handicap.

That is the score your handicap asks of you on an ordinary day, and it is the right yardstick for a club competition. Because the handicap comes from your best eight of the last twenty rounds, a typical round lands above it: roughly three or four strokes in the Golf Monthly benchmarks, which put the 10, 15, 20 and 25 handicap at about 13, 18, 23 and 29 over par.

The milestones, in strokes

Bogey on every hole is 18 over par, which is 90 on a par-72 course.
GoalOn par 72What it asks
Break 10027 over or betterBogey golf with a few doubles
Break 9017 over or betterFewer doubles, no penalty strokes, almost no three-putts
Break 807 over or betterGreens in regulation and a short game that saves pars

How the game scales by skill shows in the distances too: in Shot Scope's measurements a scratch male amateur averages 285 yards with the driver and 178 with the 7-iron, a 15 handicap 236 and 154, and a 25 handicap 204 and 132. The gap in distance is real, but most strokes are lost elsewhere: on penalties, doubles and three-putts.

What to do with your number

Compute your own handicap with the handicap calculator, read the points game in Stableford scoring, and see where strokes are won in strokes gained. When you are ready to bring the number down, the plan lives in how to break 100.

Questions about golf scores

What is a good golf score for a beginner?

Breaking 100 on a par-72 course is the first real milestone: it is 28 over par, which is bogey golf with a few doubles. Golf Monthly's 2026 benchmarks, built from Shot Scope data, put the average 25-handicapper at roughly 29 over par, so a score in the high 90s is already better than average for that group.

What is a good golf score for my handicap?

Net par: par plus your playing handicap. On a neutral par-72 course a 15 handicap plays to about 86 in stroke play at the recommended 95 % allowance. Remember that a handicap is built from your best eight of twenty rounds, so an average round runs a few strokes above it.

Is 90 a good score in golf?

Yes. Ninety on a par-72 course means a bogey on every hole, and it is where an average club player's handicap sits in the middle teens. Breaking 90 is the second milestone, and it comes mostly from fewer double bogeys and fewer three-putts, not from longer drives.

What is the average golf score?

It depends on who you count. Golf Monthly's Shot Scope benchmarks put the average round at roughly 13, 18, 23 and 29 over par for a 10, 15, 20 and 25 handicap. Players who track rounds with a device are more engaged than the typical golfer, so treat these as the upper end of what an average player shoots.

How is Stableford related to a good score?

Stableford turns your net score into points, and 36 points is a net par round: you played to your handicap. Anything above 36 is a good day, and the format forgives a bad hole. Our Stableford scoring page explains the points and the scorer.

How do I improve my score fastest?

Remove the big numbers. For most players, fewer double bogeys, fewer penalty strokes and fewer three-putts are worth more than a longer drive. Shot Scope's data shows a 10-handicapper with about three double bogeys per round and a 15-handicapper with nearly five (as reported by First Call Golf), and that gap is where the strokes are.
