Skins: one hole can win the pot

Skins is the game where a quiet round turns on one hole: three ties in a row and the next green is worth four. Here is how it works, how to play it net so everybody can win, and a scorer that counts the carryovers.

Short answer: every hole is one skin. The lowest score on the hole wins it only if it is unique; a tie for lowest carries the skin to the next hole, which is then worth two. Play gross or net (strokes by stroke index). Most skins at the end wins; agree before the round what happens to skins unclaimed on 18.

18 skins unclaimed

The rules

  1. 1

    One skin per hole

Eighteen skins in a round, each worth one unit. The group decides the unit.

  2. 2

    Lowest unique score wins

A 3 wins if nobody else made 3. Two 3s and a 4 is a tie: nobody wins, the skin carries.

  3. 3

    Carryovers stack

A carried skin is added to the next hole. Three ties in a row make the fourth hole worth four skins, and the winner takes them all.

  4. 4

    The end

Skins unclaimed after 18 stay unclaimed, are played off or are split: your rule, agreed first. The scorer shows the number.

Net skins: why it is the better game

Gross skins between a 6 and a 22 is a gift to the 6. Net skins gives each player the strokes they receive on the hole by stroke index: the 22 gets a stroke on most holes and two on the hardest, so their bogey is a net par and their par wins skins. Tick net in the scorer, type the playing handicaps and the stroke indexes from the card, and the lowest net score takes the hole. The carry rules do not change.

Playing for a carried pot

When a hole is worth three or four skins, the mistake is to attack. Everyone else does, and the pot usually goes to the player who made par from the middle of the green. Know where your stroke falls, play to the fat side, and let the others find the water. The second mistake is to forget the ties are what make the game: a hole halved in 4s is not a wasted hole, it is a bigger next one.

Before you start

Handicaps from the handicap calculator, the unit, the rule for unclaimed skins, and whether a skin needs at least a par. For a match between two sides instead of a pot, play a Nassau; with four who like to choose, play Wolf.

Skins questions

How does a skins game work?

Every hole is worth one skin. The player with the lowest score on the hole wins it, but only if nobody ties that score. If two or more tie for the lowest, the skin carries over and the next hole is worth two, and so on until someone wins a hole outright.

What happens to a skin that nobody wins on the 18th?

Agree it before you start. Common options: it stays unclaimed, the group plays a sudden-death hole, or the carried skins are split. The scorer shows how many are unclaimed at the end.

Can you play skins with handicaps?

Yes, net skins: each player takes the strokes they receive on the hole by stroke index, and the lowest net score wins. It is the fairest way to play skins in a group with different handicaps, since a 24 with a stroke can win a hole against a scratch golfer's par.

Is there a maximum score to win a skin?

Some groups set one: a skin must be won with a par (or a bogey) at most, so a carried pot is not won by a lucky double bogey. The scorer does not cap it; agree the cap on the tee if you want one.

How many players for skins?

Two to four works best. With more than four the ties pile up and the pot gets decided by one hole at the end.
