Scramble: the team format, done properly

A scramble is the format where a beginner's putt can win the hole and nobody has to play their own bad shots. Here is how it works, how the team handicap is meant to be built, how to play it well, and a scorer for the team.

Short answer: everyone hits, the team picks the best ball, everyone plays from there, repeat until holed; one team score per hole. The recommended team handicap (Appendix C) is 25% of the lowest course handicap + 20% + 15% + 10% of the others for four players (30/20/10 for three, 35/15 for two), rounded. Events add their own conditions, like a minimum number of drives per player.

How a scramble is played

  1. 1

    Everyone tees off

Two to four players, one team. All hit; the team picks the best drive. The others pick up.

  2. 2

    Play from the chosen ball

Everyone drops within a club length of the chosen spot, no nearer the hole, keeping the lie (fairway stays fairway, rough stays rough; on the green, within a putter head). All play; pick the best; repeat.

  3. 3

    Hole out, one score

The first ball in the hole ends it. Write the team's score for the hole.

  4. 4

    Apply the team handicap

Net scrambles use a percentage of each player's course handicap, not the full numbers: 25/20/15/10 for four players, low to high. The scorer computes it.

The team handicap, in numbers

TeamAllowance, lowest to highest course handicap
4 players25% · 20% · 15% · 10%
3 players30% · 20% · 10%
2 players35% · 15%

Course handicaps 4, 8, 12 and 20: 1.0 + 1.6 + 1.8 + 2.0 = 6.4, team handicap 6. The low numbers are deliberate: a team always plays its best ball, so full handicaps would make a net scramble a lottery.

How to win a scramble

Order of play is the whole strategy. Off the tee, the shortest hitter goes first to get a ball in play, the longest last, free to swing. On approaches, the best wedge player goes last. On the green, the first putt is for information: whoever putts first reads it for the others, so send the player who putts worst first and the best last. And use the minimum-drives rule early: take the weak player’s drive on a short par 4, not on the 18th when you have no choice.

The numbers behind the team

The allowances start from each player’s Course Handicap on the tee you play; the handicap calculator gives it from the Index. For a day with the same four playing against each other instead of together, see the other games.

Scramble questions

What is a scramble in golf?

A team format. Every player hits a tee shot, the team picks the best one, everyone plays their next shot from within a club length of that spot, and so on until the ball is holed. One score per hole for the team. It is the usual format for charity days and outings because beginners contribute and the pace is good.

How is a scramble handicap calculated?

The Rules of Handicapping (Appendix C) recommend, for a four-player team, 25% of the lowest course handicap, 20% of the next, 15% of the third and 10% of the highest, added and rounded. Three players: 30/20/10. Two: 35/15. The scorer does it from the course handicaps you type.

What is the minimum-drives rule?

A local rule many events add: each player's tee shot must be used a set number of times (often two or three in 18 holes), so the team cannot ride the longest hitter all day. Count them as you go; the scorer leaves that to the card.

Is a scramble played under the Rules of Golf?

Not as a recognised form of play: the Rules of Golf do not cover scrambles, so the event's own terms rule. Most follow the Rules of Golf for everything else (relief, hazards, the ball holed) and add the scramble conditions on top.

What is a good scramble score?

With four decent players, 10 to 14 under gross is common on a charity day; net, after the team handicap, the winners are often in the high teens under. It depends on the course and on the handicaps, which is why net scrambles use the allowance rather than full handicaps.
