Morris on the word caddie

AI caddie: what it can and cannot do

A caddie carries the bag, knows your game, reads the course and tells you the truth. Software does the middle two, when it has the data, and never the first. Here is the honest split, with Morris as the worked example and his limits written down.

Short answer: an AI caddie can give you a club from your real distances, a plan from your rounds, a Rules answer from the official text, a green fee from the course’s own site, your swing’s one cause from a video and your strokes gained from your shots. It cannot feel the wind, see the lie, read a green it has not mapped, or make the decision for you. In competition, advice from any device during the round is restricted by the Rules.

How to use one well

  1. 1

    Before the round

Ask for the plan: the holes that cost you most, the club off each tee, where to miss. That is where an AI caddie is strongest and where the Rules allow it.

  2. 2

    During the round

Distances only, where the course allows devices; the decision is yours. Rule 10.2 restricts advice to your caddie and partner, and Rule 4.3 restricts what a device may tell you in play.

  3. 3

    After the round

Send the card and the shots. Strokes gained by category over a few rounds, then one thing to practise, with reps. That loop is the whole value.

  4. 4

    Give it honest data

Logged distances you wish were true make every recommendation wrong. A watch does not flatter.

Why a specialist, not a general assistant

A general AI assistant can talk about golf; a golf agent knows your handicap, your rounds and your swing, and reads the Rules and the course’s site before answering. The difference shows the first time you ask ‘what club’ and get a number that is yours. More on what an AI golf coach does and why specialist agents win.

AI caddie questions

What is an AI caddie?

Software that does part of a caddie's job: a club from your own distances, a plan for the hole from your rounds, an answer to a Rules question, a price for a course. A real caddie also sees the lie, feels the wind and reads the green in front of them, and an AI does not, unless it has data for that. The honest ones say which half they do.

Can an AI caddie tell me what club to hit?

From your own distances, yes: Morris reads your Garmin averages and recommends a club for the yardage, and says why. From a guess about your distances, no better than you. The quality of the recommendation is the quality of the data.

Can an AI caddie read greens?

Only from a map it has: some apps include green slope maps for courses they have surveyed. Morris does not read your green; he tells you where to miss on the hole from your rounds, which is most of green reading anyway.

Can an AI caddie use the Rules?

If it looks them up rather than remembering them. Morris searches the official Rules text before quoting a rule number, and says when a ruling depends on facts he cannot see. For a competition, the referee decides.

Is an AI caddie allowed in competition?

Advice during a round is restricted by Rule 10.2: you may not ask anyone except your caddie or partner for advice, and devices may give distance but not club recommendations or advice during the stipulated round unless a Local Rule allows. Use the AI before and after the round, and the distance function during it, where permitted.
