Morris on where to go

Golf trip ideas, by what the group wants

Start from the month and the group, not from a list of famous courses. A winter week wants sun, a spring break wants a city, a summer pilgrimage wants wind and dunes, and a stag do wants buggies. Here is where each one goes, in Iberia first because that is where Morris lives.

Short answer: winter sun: Costa del Sol, Algarve, Canaries, Alicante. Spring city-and-golf: Lisbon, Barcelona, Madrid. Summer links: Scotland, Ireland. Budget: any coast out of season, or an hour inland. Two people: a city with courses nearby and a Nassau. Big group or stag do: a resort with several courses, buggies and a scramble. The trip planner lays out the days; Morris researches the courses and real prices on WhatsApp.

By budget

The price of a trip is green fees × rounds × players, plus the stay, the travel and the food, and only the first part is specific to golf. The green fee is cheapest out of season, on weekdays and at twilight, and an hour inland from any coast; the stay is cheapest next to the courses in low season. The green fees page explains what moves the price. Morris does not invent prices: on WhatsApp he reads the courses’ websites for your dates and tells you what he found, where and when; for a whole trip he researches the area and sends a report. Then the trip planner turns dates, group and your green-fee estimate into days, a checklist and a budget. Country pages: Spain and Portugal.

Trip idea questions

Where should we go for a golf trip in winter?

Where it is mild and the courses are open and in condition: the Costa del Sol, the Algarve, the Canary Islands, Alicante and Murcia. That is high season there, so book tee times early and expect the top prices; twilight rates and weekdays soften it.

Where is a cheap golf trip?

Anywhere out of its season: Spain's south coast and the Algarve in summer (play early), the north of Spain in spring and autumn, inland courses an hour from the coast at any time. The group's own green-fee estimate, times rounds, times players, is the budget; Morris reads the real prices for your dates.

What is a good golf trip for two?

A city with courses an hour away: Lisbon and the Estoril coast, Barcelona and the Costa Brava, Madrid and its classic clubs. Golf in the morning, the city after; a Nassau between you for the trip.

Where do you go for a links golf trip?

Scotland and Ireland, from May to September: the game on the ground it grew up on, wind included. Book a year ahead for the famous courses; the less famous ones next door are the better value and often the better day.
