Morris on the Belek trip

Golf in Turkey: a Belek guide

If a European golf week in Turkey means anywhere, it means Belek: a strip of resort courses on the Antalya coast. Here is what the sources say, how hot it really gets month by month, and how to plan the week without paying for a guess.

Short answer: Belek, in Antalya province, has 16 golf courses according to a local golf club manager (counts vary by source) and about 550,000 rounds a year. By the Turkish weather service, Antalya’s average daily maximum is 21 to 26 °C in April, May, October and November and about 34 °C in July and August, so spring and autumn are the easy months. Prices change by date and conditions, so read the course’s own page; Morris does that and gives you the source and the date.

Read the first rows as one person’s count, not a census: other writers name about a dozen championship layouts or more than twenty clubs. The courses opened from the 1990s and the region has grown around its hotels, which is why golf there is so often sold as a hotel week.

How hot it gets, month by month (average daily maximum)

MonthAntalya, °COn the course
January15.0Mild, not warm; take a layer
February15.6Mild; take a layer
March18.0Pleasant, cooler mornings

May25.7Warm and comfortable
June30.8Hot by midday; play early
July34.2Hot; early tee times

The right-hand column is our reading of the numbers, not a measurement. The pattern is clear: April, May, October and November sit between 21 and 27 °C, July and August around 34 °C.

Planning the week

  1. 1

Choose the dates by the weather, then the course by the dates

Spring and autumn are the easy months and the busiest; summer is cheaper to some and too hot to others. Decide that before you compare courses.

  2. 2

    Hotel week or green fees

Many golf weeks in Belek are sold as hotel packages with golf. That can be good value, and it can lock you into the courses of that group. Compare with the green fees on the courses' own sites for the days you would play.

  3. 3

Read the conditions, not just the price

18 or 9 holes, buggy or not, high or low season, whether a handicap certificate is asked. The same course has several prices; the honest one is on its own site for your date.

  4. 4

Check entry rules for your passport

Visa and entry rules depend on nationality and change. Look them up with the official source for your country before booking.

How Morris helps with a Turkish trip

On WhatsApp he reads each course’s own website for the green fee in your dates and gives you the price with its conditions, the source and the date he read it, and the link. If a course publishes nothing, he says so. He does not book or take payment. For your group, the trip planner lays out the days and the checklist, the green fees page explains what you pay for, and the packing list covers the sun. If you are weighing it against the Iberian coast, see golf in Spain and golf in Portugal.

Belek questions

How many golf courses are there in Belek?

Sources disagree, because it depends on what you count. A Belek golf club general manager quoted by Hürriyet Daily News says 16 courses, with about 550,000 rounds played a year (460,000 in 2023). Travel pieces name anything from about a dozen championship layouts to more than twenty clubs. Treat 16 as the figure from someone who works there and check each course's own website.

Where is Belek and how do I get there?

Belek is a tourism centre in the Serik district of Antalya province, on Turkey's Mediterranean coast. The usual way in is by air to Antalya, then a road transfer to your hotel. Most golf weeks are booked around a resort hotel, since the region has grown up around about 50 hotels according to the same Hürriyet interview.

When is the best time to play golf in Belek?

The Turkish State Meteorological Service's figures for Antalya put the average daily maximum at 21.4 °C in April, 25.7 °C in May, 26.6 °C in October and 21.4 °C in November. July and August average 34 °C. That makes spring and autumn the comfortable windows for walking four or five hours; summer is possible early in the morning, and midwinter is mild (15 to 17 °C by day) but not warm.

Is Belek cheaper in winter?

Prices follow demand and demand follows the weather, so expect the middle of summer and midwinter to be quieter than spring and autumn. But the honest price is the one on the course's own website for your dates, not a rule of thumb. Morris reads it for you with its source and date.

Do I need a handicap to play in Turkey?

Each course says on its own website what it asks of visitors. Take your Handicap Index or the certificate from your federation or club app so you do not have to find out at the desk. Morris reads the course's conditions with the price.

Which tournament put Belek on the map?

The Turkish Airlines Open, the first European Tour event in Turkey, was first played in 2013 at Montgomerie Maxx Royal, a Colin Montgomerie design in Belek, as reported by Golfmagic at the time.
