Morris on swing analysis

How AI swing analysis works

From a phone video to a priority and a drill: how the system finds your pose and the key positions, what it can tell you and where it stops.

Short answer: the system takes a video, detects your body in every frame (the pose), locates the key swing positions (setup, takeaway, top, impact, finish), compares what it sees with patterns of what usually happens, and returns a probable cause, one priority and a drill. It works well with a good video; with a bad one, the honest move is for it to say so.

Step 1: film it properly

The quality of the analysis depends on the input. Practical rules:

  • Full body in frame, head to feet, plus the clubhead on the backswing.
  • Two classic views: face-on (camera facing the player) and down the line (behind, on the ball-to-target line).
  • Fixed camera at waist or hip height, no zoom or movement.
  • Clear light and clothing that contrasts with the background.
  • One full swing, at real speed.

Step 2: detect the pose

Pose estimation models locate body points (shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees, ankles) in every frame. That produces a moving “skeleton”. Some products also rebuild the motion in three dimensions from a single video; that is the case with Sportsbox AI, which does 3D analysis from the phone.

In Morris, for example, the pose is measured with Apple Vision, and the result is four images with the skeleton drawn on and a verdict in about three minutes.

Step 3: find the key positions

A swing is continuous, but coaches read it by positions. The system must decide which frame each one is:

  1. Setup.
  2. Takeaway.
  3. Top.
  4. Impact.
  5. Finish.

Some systems add more, such as follow-through. In Badgie Golf’s swing analysis, since September 2026 the pose measurement delivers six moments: setup, takeaway, top, impact, finish and follow-through, and the result arrives in one to two minutes.

Step 4: from position to diagnosis

This is the part most often mistaken for “magic”. There are two phases:

Measure. Distances and angles between points (for example, spine tilt or shoulder turn relative to the hips).

Interpret. Going from the measurement to “what probably causes your ball flight”. Some systems combine pose with a vision and language model. In Badgie Golf’s case, the analysis makes two passes: one detects the view and the key moments, and another extracts faults, each with its confidence level, a single priority, backswing and downswing tempo, and drills.

That “confidence” matters. A diagnosis that does not distinguish “sure” from “possible” is a worse diagnosis.

Step 5: one priority, not twenty

A good analysis does what a good teacher would: it acknowledges what you do well and points to one thing. Twenty corrections at once cannot be worked on. The message should also be in player language (“you’re hitting it heavy because your weight stays back”) and not only in degrees.

There is a good honesty practice: do not quote angles in the message to the player and use them only as internal evidence. That is Morris’s standard in a swing verdict.

What AI swing analysis cannot do

  • See what the video does not show. A single angle hides swing plane, weight distribution or face angle at impact.
  • Replace the radar. Video does not measure ball or club speed. Launch monitors do.
  • Guarantee improvement. It is a reading, not a promise.
  • Understand your body. Mobility, injuries or fatigue do not show on video.
  • Correct by hand. That is the teacher’s job.

Video, radar or both

The ideal combines both: the radar tells you what the ball does; the video, why. On the launch monitor market, GMI estimates $234.4 million in 2025 and $523.5 million in 2035 (CAGR 8.6%).

How to get the most from the analysis

  1. Film two views with the same club.
  2. Keep one priority.
  3. Do drills with repetitions (for example, three sets of ten with one specific feel).
  4. Film again after a few weeks from the same spot.
  5. Take the video to your pro. It is the best combination. More in AI golf coach or human pro.

Swing analysis questions

How long does an analysis take?

Depends on the product: Morris speaks of about three minutes and Badgie Golf of one to two.

Do I need a tripod?

It helps a lot; any stable support works.

Does any phone work?

Yes, with good light and the full body in frame.

Can it see the ball flight?

No. That is for the radar or good observation.

What if the system says the video is not enough?

Film again with the full body and a fixed camera. A “can’t tell” beats an invented diagnosis.

Does it work for juniors?

Yes, but growing bodies change; the coach’s judgement weighs more.
