Your WHS handicap report, explained

Your handicap can rise even after a reasonable round. What leaves the record matters as much as what enters it. Here is a complete invented record you can check.

With at least 20 scores, the basic WHS calculation averages the lowest eight Score Differentials in the latest 20, then applies any required safeguards or adjustments. A new round removes the oldest one. You therefore need the full record, not just today's gross score, to explain a change.

From a score to a Score Differential

For the synthetic 18-hole round: adjusted gross score 83, Course Rating 71.0, Slope Rating 125 and PCC 0. The Rule 5.1a calculation is (113 ÷ 125) × (83 − 71.0 − 0) = 10.848, rounded to 10.8.

Adjusted gross score is the score after applicable handicap adjustments, not necessarily the number written on the competition leaderboard. Course Rating, Slope and PCC must come from the tees and day played. This example already assumes a valid adjusted score.

Why a good round can still move the Index up

The eight lowest values in our invented record are 12.0, 12.5, 13.0, 13.0, 13.5, 14.0, 14.0 and 14.5. They total 106.5; dividing by eight gives 13.3125, rounded to 13.3. The oldest result is the 12.0.

Replace it with a 12.8 differential and the new basic average rounds to 13.4, even though 12.8 is below the previous Index. Replace it instead with the example round's 10.8 and the result becomes 13.2. These are alternative scenarios, not consecutive rounds.

What Morris can explain, and what stays official

Morris would show the outgoing differential, the incoming one and the eight currently counting. That makes the forecast traceable. The sample assumes no exceptional-score reduction, cap or Committee adjustment; its arithmetic is not a replacement for the association's official record.

With fewer than 20 scores, different counts and adjustments apply. Nine-hole records have their own treatment. For an actual forecast, use the recorded differentials and the relevant Low Handicap Index and adjustment history. In Spain, compare the result with the RFEG record.

Common questions

Is my handicap the average of my best eight gross scores?

No. It uses Score Differentials, which account for course difficulty and playing conditions, rather than raw gross scores or Stableford points. This example uses 20 valid 18-hole differentials.

Why did my handicap rise after a decent round?

Check the differential leaving your latest-20 window. In this example, replacing 12.0 with 12.8 raises the basic Index from 13.3 to 13.4. Your actual record may also include WHS safeguards or adjustments.

What score will lower my handicap?

There is no single gross score without the course, tees, PCC and outgoing record. In this invented case, adjusted 83 on Rating 71.0 and Slope 125 with PCC 0 produces 10.8 and a basic new Index of 13.2.

Is this my official handicap?

No. It is a synthetic worked example. Your authorised association or club maintains the official Handicap Index and applies the full WHS rules.
