Valderrama is above all known as the venue of the 1997 Ryder Cup, which Europe won with Seve Ballesteros as captain. Tiger Woods and Mike Weir also won both editions of the WGC-American Express Championship here, in 1999 and 2000. The design is by Robert Trent Jones, who built it in 1974 in Sotogrande. Today the club is private and welcomes visitors with a limited number of tee times. Those who come will also find that a forecaddie is compulsory for each group.

The course combines narrow, winding fairways, with low olive trees and cork oaks that can block your shot even when you are on the fairway, and small, undulating, very fast greens. The 4th has a waterfall to the right of a two-tier green. The 17th, a par 5 with water in front, was toughened up by Ballesteros for the Ryder Cup; in 2010 McDowell made an albatross there and in 2017 Sergio García won with a birdie on that hole. After your round, the Spike Bar serves visitors with a reserved time.
