Abama was designed by Dave Thomas on the western slope of Teide. In 2005 it hosted a European Tour event, and Englishman John Bickerton won the Abama Open de Canarias. The Ladies European Tour's Tenerife Women's Open returned to the course in 2025. Golf Digest recognises it among the best courses in Europe with its Editors' Choice Award. Almost every hole looks out toward La Gomera and the Atlantic, and the layout features 22 lakes, waterfalls and white-sand bunkers.
The 5th hole, Green 315, has its green at the highest point of the course. The 8th, Los Naranjos, plays downhill and is shorter than its yardage suggests. The 10th, El Oasis: three lakes run down the left side of the fairway and the green is narrow. Because of the elevation changes, a buggy is compulsory. The clubhouse, in the middle of the course, has a bar-restaurant with a terrace and is open all year round from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
